History

Chudleigh Fort was built in the 17th century, during the English Civil War (1642), to protect the town of Chudleigh from the Royalist forces.

It was constructed on a hill overlooking the town and provided a strategic vantage point for the Parliamentarian forces. It is a 5-sided platform with 14 gun ports, which in combination with another fort on the West side of the River Torridge, helped defend Bideford and the approach via the river.

After the Civil War
The fort was largely abandoned, and its structures fell into disrepair. However, in the mid-18th century, the fort was re-purposed as a prison for French prisoners of war.

The conditions at the prison were reportedly poor, and many of the prisoners died due to disease and mistreatment.

During the Napoleonic Wars in the early 19th century, the fort was again used as a military base, this time by the British army. It served as a training ground for soldiers and a staging area for military operations.

The Chudleigh Fort has been significant in years of war and now it is standing in a public park which dates back to 1642.

And Finally

Chudleigh Fort has played an important role in the military and political history of Devon and the wider region. During the English Civil War, it was a key defensive position for the Parliamentarians and helped secure their victory in the region.

In addition to its military significance, Chudleigh Fort also has cultural and historical significance. It is a tangible reminder of the region’s past and serves as a symbol of the struggles and triumphs of the people who lived there.

The fort has witnessed and been a part of many significant events in the region’s history. Its legacy lives on as a symbol of the struggles and triumphs of the people who lived in Devon in the past.

But now as a carpark, defending the highstreets of Bideford from a backlog of vehicles and a spot to eat sandwiches overlooking the view of the fort and possibly imagining times gone by. Also great to walk the dog around or to use as a feature to aim for while on a jog!
