Chudleigh Fort

Chudleigh Fort is an iconic Iron Age earthwork located near the River Torridge in Bideford, Devon

Dating back to the 4th century BC, this prehistoric defensive site was likely constructed as protection from the possible invasions by local Celtic tribes, although there is no archaeological evidence to confirm this

Throughout the centuries, Chudleigh Fort has been used for various other purposes and most recently for agricultural activities

Today, visitors can take a historic walk around the fort and learn about its unique history through informative information boards

This is a great place to learn more about prehistory of the area, and it’s also a place with an amazing view of Bideford countryside and town

Chudleigh Fort is a lovely little place to visit.The information panel is very informative and tells you lots about the venue and the area.If you are in Bideford and can spare half an hour it’s worth a little visit.

The fort has amazing views over Bideford, particularly on a sunny day. It is essentially a modern structure however erected to mark where parliamentarian and royalist troops fought in the civil war. The canons were placed here, as you would an ornamental tree I suppose but that doesn't make it any less impressive just a bit random if you like your history! It's worth noting there is also a 'cross' war memorial here to the first and second world war at the top end of the park.It's a small site with no real parking unless you're a resident but if you're on foot and you fancy a cracking view it's worth a look. The Scots pines are also worth a view of you like big bulky trees!

Great views of Bideford and Torridge river. Annually there is a community picnic for East-the-Water residents supportrd by local Cllrs volunteer groups..
