National Trust – Watersmeet

National Trust’s Watersmeet is a grade II listed building nestled into the heart of Exmoor National Park in North Devon

Originally built in 1804 as the hunting lodge for Lynton and Lynmouth, the estate in now owned and managed by the National Trust

The majestic structure, encircling its own beautiful woodlands, is set right next to a dramatic gorge created as the EastLyn River and HoarOak Stream collide

Visitors to Watersmeet can enjoy a stroll through the ancient woodlands and explore self-guided trails along the boulder-lined riverbank, while taking in spectacular views of both valleys

The early 19th century chapel on site houses ancient Sedum varieties within its walls, while the old water-powered Millpond remains the site’s key feature, allowing easy access to stunning wildlife watching opportunities of kingfishers and otters fishing in their natural environment

The house’s gardens are full of interesting flowers and plants, many of which are endemic to the area and have been lovingly tendered by generations of gardeners

Nature lovers and romantics alike will find something to enjoy at Watersmeet, making it a worthwhile day trip from nearby towns like Minehead and Ilfracombe

My second visit here and loved it. So lovely to be able to walk along the river and hear it as it flows down with such an energy about it. In the way back we did the woodland walk which she a different atmosphere on this beautiful place

Beautiful National trust site with cafe in the best setting in the middle of the valley. Hikes around here are strenuous with steep climbs but views are amazing . Important to note there is no National trust car parking and council car park only accept cash. No app/phone/card payments accepted at car park.

A very nice place to visit. We walk from the road in beautiful nature for about a quarter of an hour's walk and arrive at a cafe in nature, drinking coffee in magical nature. Spending about two hours, but more is possible if you want to do hiking trails.

What a treat. Fabulous pit stop for cream tea, and lovely walk. When parking, machine is coins only, so be prepared. And with dogs, keep to footpaths as ticks are quite common!

Absolutely beautiful Hidden gem. 3 to 4 miles walk but definitely it's worth to walking the River side course. There is a pretty cafe in the middle of the course to have a relaxing break.
